One extremely unique car with a ton of interesting history. The story of this car first begins with another legendary car, the 1 of 18 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. The 33 Stradale was one of the world’s first supercars and was one of the fastest & most expensive commercially available cars during the 60’s. Of the 18 total cars built, a handful of chassis were re-imagined by a handful of Italian coach builders such as Pininfarina, Italdesign, and Bertone. The car shown here is known as the 1976 Alfa Romeo 33 Navajo and is a Bertone creation which now belongs to Alfa Romeo's 'Museo Storico' collection, which consists of all five Tipo 33 based ‘show cars’ or ‘concept cars’ and at least two regular Tipo 33 Stradales. Bertone was the first company to restyle a 33 Stradale with the the 'Carabo' at the 1968 Turin Motor Show. The Carabo was a major reason as to why the ‘wedge-shape’ obsession began during the 1970’s. The second Bertone-designed 33 Stradale concept was this car, the Navajo. The 1976 Alfa Romeo 33 Navajo concept (750.33.117) bursted into the automotive scene with a never-before-seen design that looked like it time traveled from the future. The original chassis of the 33 Stradale was lengthened and revised in order to optimize room for two passengers. The body of the car was created entirely with fiberglass, ensuring an overall lightweight result. Other features such as active aerodynamics, pop-up headlights, orange accents & Bertone badging all allow this car to be one of the most awesome one-offs ever produced. The Navajo was penned by Giuseppe ‘Nuccio’ Bertone, who over Carrozzeria Bertone from his father, Giovanni after World War II. The Navajo also features one of the first ever examples of an active front diffuser, which would move accordingly to how fast you were traveling in order to maintain maximum aerodynamic potential.
