This is the 1916 American-LaFrance Speedster, chassis number 1221, powered by a 9.4-liter, six-cylinder T-head engine. This massive automobile was developed by the American vehicle manufacturer American LaFrance (ALF), which was active from 1873 until 2014. The American LaFrance Fire Engine Company was founded in 1903, and by 1907, it introduced its first motorized fire engine. Prior to this, Truxton Slocum LaFrance, along with partners like Alexander S. Diven, had established the LaFrance Manufacturing Company, which initially produced hand-powered equipment. This company eventually transformed into the International Fire Engine Company, which built steam-powered fire engines between 1903 and 1907. International’s offerings included a variety of vehicles, such as horse-drawn steam engines, hose wagons, hook and ladder trucks, chemical engines, and water towers. From roughly 1910 to 1920, American LaFrance (ALF) manufactured a small batch of passenger vehicles, totaling approximately 22 cars, along with several additional “racers” or “speedsters”. It was during that time, that this very special car here was constructed. Chassis number 1221 showcases a design inspired by the Mercer Type 35 Raceabout, featuring a striking two-passenger body painted in yellow and black, with the same colors highlighting the suspension and chassis details. The car is equipped with large, spoked wheels and has dual spare tires mounted at the rear. Inside, the seats are upholstered in black leather, complementing the overall vintage aesthetic. Authentic touches from the era include distinctive Gray & Davis nickel headlamps, a single rear-mounted Saxon light, and a rare American-LaFrance Moto-Meter positioned atop the radiator.
How many made? American LaFrance (ALF) produced around 22 passenger vehicles and several “racers” or “speedsters” between 1910 and 1920, including this very special car.
