This is definitely a BMW that you won’t be able to find at your local dealer, or perhaps anywhere in the world for that matter, considering this is the only one of it’s kind. This is the 1969 BMW 2800 Spicup Convertible Coupe by Bertone (chassis V.0010), a unique one-off that is capable of a smooth transition from either coupe to spider, hence the name ‘Spicup’, which is a combination of the words coupe & spider. The 2800 Spicup was built based on a BMW 2500 (E3) saloon, and is very much a fully-functional automobile. Initially, BMW had no intentions to further produce this unique model, leaving the only singular concept to be purchased by and sent to a German dealer in Düsseldorf. The 2800 Spicup was reportedly designed by famous automotive designer and constructor, Nuccio Bertone, with some aid from other pioneers in the industry such as Marcello Gandini. Bertone truly wanted to showcase engineer Enzo Cingolani's idea for a retractable roof, and BMW was deemed the perfect company to work with on this project at the time. The roof is not the only unique feature to this car, as you can see Marcello Gandini included his signature front end with partially concealed headlamps, which can also be seen on the Alfa Romeo Montreal. After being kept in storage for a number of years, the car was discovered in 2008 repainted to orange and in rather poor condition. Subsequently, the one-off was sent to Carrozzeria Granturismo in Milan for a total restoration, with work being headed by technical director, Aldo Goi. After the restoration was completed, which was a collaborative effort between Carrozzeria Granturismo, Carrozzeria Bertone, and BMW, the car was sprayed back to it’s original green metallic livery, and was first presented to the public again at the Villa d'Este concours d'élégance in 2009. Following this, in October of 2011, the car was auctioned on @bonhamsmotoring and sold for $547,308. What do you think of the 2800 Spicup?
