This is the 1989 Dodge Viper VM01, the first ever fully-functional Viper. The Viper idea arose from a conversation between Chrysler’s chief of design, Tom Gale and president, Robert Lutz in 1988. Lutz was presented and impressed with some half-scale clay models, which quickly accelerated production plans. The first Viper concept was built by Metalcrafters (steel body) and Boyd Coddington's hot-rod operation (chassis/suspension). This concept was shown at the North American International Auto Show in January 1989. Aside from Lutz and Gale, engineering vice-president Francois Castaing, chassis/powertrain engineer Pete Gladysz, designer, racer and entrepreneur Carroll Shelby, as well Viper chief engineer, Roy Sjoberg (amongst others) all played key roles in bringing the Viper to life. Meticulously, Sjoberg put together a group of approximately 85 engineers (some of which morphed from the all-volunteer Team Shelby) known as ‘Team Viper’ to get the job done. Development officially began in March 1989. The body styling was completed by fall, and VM01 was ready by December. The VM01 was built primarily by ‘Vehicle Build and Shop Services’ in Michigan, and was equipped with a 300hp 5.9-liter V8 and not a 10-cylinder as seen on the production cars. The white-painted fiberglass bodywork was formed under the supervision of Team Shelby craftsman and chief engineer, Ken Nowak alongside a team of skilled trade plastic workers. Chrysler chairman, Lee Iacocca officially approved the funding and further advancement of the project in May of 1990. The Viper’s V10 engine was developed with the assistance of Lamborghini, and Chief power engineer, Dick Winkles (among others) spent a substantial amount of time in Italy to oversee the development processs. The production V10 engine was completed by February 1990. The team finished the job in 33 months time, and the Viper officially went on sale in January 1992 as the RT/10 Roadster. The Viper model has since been discontinued as of 2017.
