This is the 2011 Ferrari LaFerrari ‘Manta’ Concept (model 2), one of nine conceptual design studies that were considered during the development of the new flagship V12 hybrid (codenamed F150), which would later become the LaFerrari. This particular example, known as The Manta was styled by Tiago Miguel Inácio, a designer from Portugal. By April of 2011, the nine conceptual designs that were being considered were reduced to just five, ultimately narrowing down the competition. Ferrari’s very own Centro Stile design studio, and long-time business partner Pininfarina S.p.A was tasked with creating the design for a machine that would represent the companies very best in technical innovation and aesthetic beauty. Only two of the original nine designs were developed into full-scale models, this car shown here being one of them. These two concepts, the ‘Tensostruttura’ and the ‘Manta’ were both workings of Ferrari’s Centro Stile, subsequently leaving the LaFerrari to become the first car ever designed completely by Centro Stile Ferrari, with the project being headed by Senior Vice President of Design at Ferrari, Flavio Manzoni. The concepts were completed in May of 2011, but it wouldn’t be until 2013 that the public would get to see them. The Tensostruttura (which translates to ‘Tensile Structure’) concept truly demonstrates the exploration and creativity shown by the Ferrari design team. Out of the two, it was ultimately the ‘Manta’ concept shown here that was chosen as the basis for the final design. Had Ferrari incorporated more styling cues from the Tensostruttura, the production model as we know it may have appeared slightly different!
