This absolutely fantastic machine shown here is a dark grey 1993 Jaguar XJ220, chassis number SAJJEAEX8AX220673, body number 228, kick plate 265 and engine number 6A 10212 SB. This example of the XJ220 was built on November 22nd of 1993, and was delivered by January 19th of 1994. This particular example of the XJ220 was originally finished in Silverstone Green over a Sand leather interior from the factory, and was first ever registered in September of 1996. This 4,492 kilometre (at the time of the auction) XJ220 was just recently offered for sale during the @rmsothebys Monaco 2024 auction. At some point in this car’s timeline, it received a professionally done non-standard dark grey paint job, as well as being equipped with aftermarket BBS light alloy wheels and an improved brake system. Jaguar Director of Engineering at the time, Jim Randle, was the one who laid the groundwork for the XJ220 project, and it was the talented South African designer by the name of Keith Helfet who is responsible for the cars styling under the direction of Randle. In the earliest day’s, the XJ220 project idea was brought to life by an informal group of Jaguar 12 engineers and designers working in their spare time, known as the ‘Saturday Club’, who displayed a V12-powered concept at the 1988 Birmingham Motor Show. The XJ220 was then subsequently officially produced under a subsidiary known as ‘JaguarSport’ due to it’s popularity at the show, however, once production began, the cars were equipped with a (542hp) 3.5L twin-turbocharged Jaguar JRV-6 engine instead of the V12 seen in the concept. Ultimately, while customers did have an idea of the drastic changes taking place in terms of the actual production car, Jaguar did not meet their initial production plans for the model due to numerous limitations, factors and changes.
