The Ghibli model name is one that has popped up numerous times throughout the history of the Maserati company. The Ghibli model was first ever presented during the 1966 Turin Motor Show as a concept car. Later known under the designation Tipo AM115, the Ghibli, was named after a Libyan Arabic term for a hot dry south-westerly wind. This new 2+2 V8-powered grand-tourer was designed by the famous Italian automobile designer, Giorgetto Giugiaro while he was working at Italian design and coach-building company, Ghia. Deliveries of the Ghibli model began in 1967, each powered by a 4.7L V8 engine with either a manual transmission or an automatic. A Spyder variation went into production officially for the 1969 model year, and when all was said and done, Maserati only developed just 125 Spyders total (including 45 SS Spyders. The 330hp 4.9 L Tipo AM 115/49 V8-powered SS was also introduced for the 1969 model year, and at the time of its arrival, it was the fastest Maserati road car ever. This Ghibli SS example is believed to be 1 or just 425 total SS Coupe examples built, and 1 of approximately 413 total in left-hand drive configuration. The interior of this car is finished in striking ‘Lipstick Red’ Connolly leather, and inside the cabin is where you’ll find the five-speed ZF transaxle. This particular example, AM115/49 2266 was finished in Modena, Italy in September of 1971, and was subsequently delivered to Grossman Motor Company in West Nyack, New York. The Ghibli model was also resurrected from 1992 until 1998 with the Marcello Gandini-designed Tipo AM336. It’s even a model that’s still offered today by Maserati, ever since the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, the Tipo M157 Ghibli is one of the companies very popular mid-size luxury car offerings.
