This is the 2007 X-Works/Xtreme Motorsports X-1 (chassis X10001P), a one-of-a-kind prototype vehicle constructed on the basis of Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI. The X1, the X-Works company’s inaugural model, is the culmination of 30 months of dedicated development. Its design comes from Andrew Borrowman and Sean Prendergast, whose combined expertise spans roles at Rover, Panther Cars, and Grand Prix Engineering Services. The construction for this unique project began in 2004 after X-Works teamed up with Xtreme Motorsports, a United Kingdom-based company with a goal in mind of developing a 2-seater sports car with an Evo drivetrain. The passenger cell of the X1 is crafted using advanced carbon composite technology, setting it apart with its innovative design. The vacuumed formed carbon fiber monocoque chassis was constructed in Istanbul by the X-Works team, and it’s one of the first of its kind in the industry. The dynamics of the chassis itself were engineered by Toney Cox and John Kirkham. The advanced composite technology not only delivers a remarkably rigid structure but also plays a pivotal role in achieving the car’s impressively low weight of just 1180kg. Orginally, the project was funded by a Turkish investor, and the goal was to not only build this interesting car, but also to develop and start a composite company. After some time had passed, the investor sold their interest to another Russian investor, which ultimately resulted in the car being shipped to the United Kingdom for further engineering and refinements. This time, the idea was to further develop the car into what could become a production sports car that could perform well in the harsh winters. The car’s ultimate demise came in 2007, during the Great Recession, which caused the project to become shelved, despite showcasing some promising performance capabilities and ideas.
